Van Lebrone Russell, 78, of Carterville, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Tom Ferguson officiating. Military rites will immediately follow services and will be accorded by the Carterville American Legion Post, Herrin V.F.W and American Legion Post and the Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m., Sunday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Van was born on December 15, 1940, in Makanda, to William Henry and Mary Opal (Clark) Russell. He married Shelba Dean Kelton on November 22, 1974, in Carbondale.
He is survived by his wife, Shelba Russell of Carterville; daughters, Kirsten Dawson, Debbie Campbell, Carla Hudgens, and Crystal Culp; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Retha Thornberry.
Van was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sherry Lynn Byerly; brothers, William "Doc" and J.D. Russell; and sisters, Aileen Brewer and Mary Lou Russell.
He honorably served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Van attended Seventh-day Adventist Church in Marion.
Van was a talented carpenter and cabinet maker.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
