Michael Richard Smith, 62, of Carterville, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2019, at St. Louis University Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Robert "Butch" Beltz officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Mike was born April 22, 1957, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, to William "Bill" and Margaret (Poston) Smith. He married Lisa Ann Jarvis on May 31, 1977, in Herrin.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Smith of Carterville; daughters, Hazel (Steve) Swain and Angela Smith, all of Carterville; son, Michael (Khela) Smith of Carterville; grandchildren, Brittany, Kaitlyn and Emily Swain, and Joshua and Abby Smith, all of Carterville, and Emmali and Levi Clark, who he considered grandkids; brothers, David (Mary) Smith of South Carolina, Johnny Smith of Salem and Chuck Ingram of South Carolina; sisters, Lois (Darrell) McGrew of Salem, Dorothy Smith of Centralia and Brenda Franklin of Dix; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charlie Snow of Bonnie, Patricia Parker, Carla (Bill) Ren, Carl (Charlene) Jarvis, all of Carterville, and Robert (Elainea) Jarvis of Elkville.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kelly Smith; sister, Velma Snow; and brother, Billy Smith.
He retired from the Street Department with the City of Carterville after 15 years of service.
Mike was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting with his buddies; having cook-outs with friends; and tending to his yard. He also liked to go to auctions with his friends.
Most of all, Mike loved spending time with his family.
