John Patrick Garrett of Mt. Vernon, IL, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the home of his daughter in Makanda, Saturday, December 14, 2019.
He was born May 5, 1942, in Aurora, son of John and Twila Garrett of Crystal Lake, IL.
He married Ann Michele (Rosson) Garrett on December 28, 1966, in Carbondale. She survives in Mt. Vernon.
A veteran of the Vietnam War from 1966-1970, he served as a lieutenant on the USS Washburn, completing two tours of duty to Vietnam in 1968 and 1969.
After his military service, he completed his education earning a PhD in educational administration from SIUC. He began his professional career as an educator at Mt. Vernon Township High School in Mt. Vernon, IL, in 1970 as a science teacher, dean of students, assistant to the superintendent, principal, and superintendent.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, Joseph Charles Garrett.
He is survived by his wife; son Joseph Charles Garrett, II, of Herrin, IL; son Matthew Alexander Garrett (Mackie) and wife Britte of Iowa City, IA; daughter Katherine Valerie Garrett and companion Marvin Miller of Makanda IL; grandchildren Maia Garrett of Iowa City, IA and Wesley Patrick Garrett Miller of Makanda, IL; sister Jeannine Garrett of Tuscola, IL; sister Ruth Ann Sarro of Marshfield, WI; brother-in-law James Forrest Rosson, Jr. of Knoxville, TN; several nieces and nephews; and his very special and beloved cat, Bill.
He enjoyed and loved his family, reading, and horses.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions to the First Christian Church; 306 West Monroe Street; Carbondale, IL 62901.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Monday, December 16, 2019, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Rev. Karen Knodt officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Monday. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2019, in Rowan Cemetery in Makanda.
