Carterville - James “Jim” Roger Merz, 85, of Carterville, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at his home.
Entombment will take place at a later date at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville is in charge of arrangements.
Jim was born on August 24, 1932, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, to Anthony and Helen (Daugherty) Merz. He married Joyce Dean Casey on November 23, 1993, in White Ash, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Merz of Carterville; children, Paul, Chris, Michael, David, Denise, Betsy, and Katy; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
Jim honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1949-1955 aboard a submarine. Following his time in the service, Jim held lifetime membership with the submarine veterans.
He graduated in 1950 from St. Leo’s High School.
Jim was the Vice President of Michigan National Bank for 18 years. He retired from the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Jim was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. He was a 4th Degree Knight having also served as past Grand Knight of Columbus with Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carterville.
