David Ray Smith, 71, of Carterville, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Christian Covenant Fellowship Church in Carterville, with Rev. Ralph Brandon and Dr. Rob Schneider officiating. Military rites will immediately follow. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, at the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the Carterville American Legion Post Honor Guard.
He was born August 22, 1948, in Carbondale, to Walter Ray and Harriet Alberta (Robinson) Smith. David married Darla Hess December 24, 1970, in Carterville.
David is survived by his wife of 49 years, Darla Smith of Carterville; daughter, Jessica (David) Allen of Granite City; grandsons, Seth, Adam and Levi Allen, all of Granite City; and his beloved dog, Ollie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
David honorably served our country in the United States Army during Vietnam.
He worked for Illinois Central Railroad in the maintenance department where he would oversee the rail systems. David also worked for Marion Toyota, Ike Honda, Country Cupboard and Carterville DQ.
He was a member of the Cambria Fire Department and the Coal Belt Fire Protective Association.
David was a faithful member of Christian Covenant Fellowship Church in Carterville, where he was in charge of the kitchen for Monday night men's fellowship meetings.
David liked to aggravate people, but truly loved helping others. He proudly volunteered placing Honor Wreaths on veterans' graves.
He enjoyed the outdoors-working in his yard or detailing cars.
